John Masters Organics grew out of John's “desire to create a luxury beauty line that treats the earth with respect.” For over 20 years John Masters has been developing a range of organic skincare and haircare products. This is the first time I've tried John Masters Organics products and in this review I look at three products from the John Masters Organics haircare range:
- John Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo for Normal Hair
- John Masters Organics Lavender & Avocado Intensive Conditioner
- John Masters Organics Rose & Apricot Hair Milk
Thanks to Only Naturals for sending me these products to try.
About John Masters Organics
In the 1980s, John Masters was a well-respected hair stylist who developed an interest in an organic lifestyle. The serious health risks posed by inhaling and handling harsh salon chemicals on a daily basis inspired him to create a toxin-free salon environment which then lead to John seeing clients in his NY apartment, where he used only ammonia-free herbal and clay-based dyes from Europe and experimented with non-toxic forms of hair care.

John created his first organic product, Dry Hair Nourishment and Defrizzer, in 1991 which developed into John Masters Organics, the first comprehensive, luxury-organic hair care line using essential oils, plant extracts, and other health-food staples. The range now has over 49 luxuruious products.

John Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo for Normal Hair
70% certified organic ingredients
Be a Shade Greener verdict
John Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo for Normal Hair blends lavender and rosemary extracts with 13 other certified-organic ingredients plus wheat amino acids and soy protein. The brown transparent liquid, like most natural and organic shampoos, doesn't lather up into masses of bubbles. (Remember it's not the lather that cleans your hair.) The lather is just enough to evenly distribute the shampoo throughout my hair and a little goes a long way. I tend to have greasy roots with normal ends and the shampoo effectively removes the grease without drying out the ends. It rinses out easily leaving my hair and scalp feeling properly clean. I am not great at conditioning my hair as I feel like I haven't got time. (Ridiculous, I know. I don't know what I've done with all those minutes I've saved from not conditioning my hair!) Even without using the conditioner my hair felt softer and looked smoother than when I just use my normal shampoo and my haphazardly wavy hair looked shiny, smoother with more defined waves.

Great conditioner which delivers moisture without weighing down my hair. It dealt easily with my sometimes frizzy fly-aways and left my hair feeling soft and smooth with more defined waves. It's definitely worth using as there is a considerable difference to the condition of my hair after a few months of use due to the organic lavender, avocado and babassu oils which renew dry and damaged hair. Soy protein helps to strengthen the hair shaft.
Fragrance
Very light, natural fragrance.
Directions – how to use
Apply to wet, clean hair, leave in for 1-5 minutes, rinse well. Follow with styling product if desired.

John Masters Organics Rose & Apricot Hair Milk
Be a Shade Greener verdict
This leave-in hair milk was my favourite product out of the three John Masters Organics items I tried. It's the perfect versatile hair product for me as it can be used on damp or dry hair and it smells beautiful. I squeeze a small amount of the cream (it's not what I would call a milk) into my palm and then apply it to the ends before smoothing the residue on my palms over the rest of my hair. It de-frizzes and tames flyaways making my hair look shinier. “A little goes a long way” is probably the most common phrase on this website but it really is the case with natural and organic beauty products. The first time I used this, I applied far too much so I suggest you start with a tiny blob, let your hair dry and apply more if needed. It can also be used as a light-hold styling product.
Fragrance
This smells absolutely gorgeous with a beautiful rose scent.
Directions – how to use
Apply to damp or dry hair, focusing on damaged or frizzy areas such as the ends. Follow with any John Masters Organics styling products.
